CUTTING THE CORD, BYE BYE CABLE
Updated: Jan 22, 2020
Recently my Fiancé and I decided it was time for us to "Cut The Cord" and cancel our DirecTV. The decision was long past due. We were tired of seeing our cable bill constantly increase and in all honesty... WE RARELY USED IT. After seeing our cable bill climb from 50 to 80 to over 100 dollars a month, it was time to make the call. Now I know what you are thinking. How in Gods earth could you live without television. This is the modern world, not the stone age. Everyone has television now days whether DirecTV, Dish, Spectrum, Verizon, etc. Well in all honestly, it was pretty easy for us. With so many other options now days, at a portion of the price, it wasn't hard. You figure it was costing us close to 1200 dollars a year to keep our DirecTV. Imagine what we could do with that money. Add it to our savings, invest it in mutual funds, plan an amazing trip, or so many other things.
So naturally, we called up our TV provider and made the call. It was actually less pain staking then you would imagine. The phone call took around 20 to 30 minutes. As a tip, I'd suggest going straight to account management when asked, so you can skip the games and save your self some time. We still had about 9 months left on our contract and had to pay the standard 20 dollars for each month you have left under contract fee. I answered a few questions, confirmed we wanted to cancel, and we were on our way. Be prepared to stay strong because I can promise you they will do everything in their power to try to get you to stay. Before they asked us if we were sure we wanted to cancel, they offered us a number of deals at a much cheaper price. Once we confirmed, they told me I would be receiving an email shortly and that I would need to ship back all my equipment they provided. I said no problem and I was happily on my way. I must say it was exhilarating to be contract free knowing I was no longer a financial slave to one of these large television providers. And I was even happier knowing how much money I would save.
So your probably thinking, "What now?". Well thankfully we live in the modern world where there are so many ways to watch live tv without being locked in to ridiculously long contracts at over priced rates. First you will need a device to stream these online providers. Two of my favorite devices to use are the Amazon Fire Stick and the Roku Stick, which you can purchase at Amazon for a reasonable price. There are also smart tv's that can stream these services as well. Once you have your streaming device, one of my favorite options is Netflix (which no, it isn't live, but does have hours upon hours of content of the latest shows and movies). Currently Netflix is $10.99 a month.
Two other options are Hulu Live TV and Sling TV which are excellent options that stream live TV. Currently Hulu cost $38.99 a month while Sling TV cost anywhere from $25 for a beginning package to $40 dollars a month for a more premium package. Now I must admit I do not have any experience with Hulu however I recently joined Sling TV (which no, I am not paid or endorsed by). So far my Fiancé and I absolutely love it. We subscribed for the blue channel package which cost $25 dollars a month and allows us to stream on up to three devices as a time. The biggest thing we have noticed is that you do have less channels, I believe the blue package has 40 plus channels, however I am saving close to 75 dollars a month which equates to around 900 dollars a year. We still have all the major channels such as TNT, FX, HGVT, etc., however we don't have all the random channels we had when we had DirecTV, which we really don't miss anyways.
I know YouTube recently came out with a live streaming tv service which runs around 40 dollars a month. My brother currently has YouTube TV, and absolutely loves it.
There are many other options as well such as DirecTV Now and Playstation Vue. Whatever you choose, I truly encourage you to look into your options and cutting your current TV provider. You will literally save hundreds of dollars a year which you can save, invest, pay off debt, or use for that summer vacation you've always wanted. By doing so , you will be one step closer to being on the path to financial freedom. After making the switch ourselves, I can promise you I wish we would have done it sooner. It's time for you to CUT THE CORD!
